in Gross Legitten. It was not damaged during the War, but was immediately abandoned
and is now in poor condition. The drive to Labiau is through several villages whose German
past is clearly visible in their architecture. Labiau itself has been largely rebuilt but the ruins of the XIII century Teutonic castle remain, as do several large XIX century town
houses.Tilsit, the next town to be visited, has held onto more of its German past with
many streets still as they were originally built. The Queen Louise Bridge across the
Neman River is now a border with Lithuania. Visitors can get close enough to take photographs.
Cherniakhovsk (Insterburg) was the third city of East Prussia and is now equally
important in Kaliningrad region. Buildings from each of the last eight centuries testify to

History Tour “The Battles of East Prussia”

5 days/ 4 nights

Königsberg, former capital of Prussia and home to the Teutonic Knights, is today known by its Russian name, Kaliningrad and is the capital of the isolated exclave of the same name. In 1807 the region played host to the armies of Napoleon at the great battlefields of Eylau and Friedland. At a raft on the river Niemen at Tilsit, the fate of Europe was decided between the French and Russian emperors. Flattened by the RAF in 1944 and besieged for almost three months in 1945, when Königsberg's defenders finally surrendered they were some 500 kilometres behind the front line. Of great strategic importance, the region was ethnically cleansed of its German inhabi-tants after WW2.
Today Kaliningrad, a city that is still recovering from the ravages and scars from 65 years ago, is gradually rediscovering its past with great efforts being made to restore and open up hitherto abandoned remains of its rich and varied history. Our long weekend tour examines two of its most significant years: 1807 and 1945. We explore the Napoleonic battlefields which have little changed, take a trip to the banks of the river Niemen, clamber over many of Koenigsberg’s ring forts so bitterly fought over and take a trip out to the once closed port of Baltiysk (formerly Pil-lau).
